Assignment Set – 2 (30 Marks)

Answer the following questions:

1.       Choose an Employment Notification and draft a letter of application in response to the same.                                                                                                                            (10 marks)

2.       Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:

The designer must evaluate the performance of a piece of fabric as well as the aesthetic aspects before electing to use it in a line.  A shrinking test under the pressing buck of the Hoffman press is the first step.  To perform this test, cut a 12 by 12 inch piece of fabric and a corresponding piece of paper.  Press the fabric, and then line it up with the paper pattern standard.  If steam, heat, and pressure have made the fabric shrink more than half-inch in a 12-inch span, problems will occur when the garment is pressed.  The average length of a jacket is 26 inches.  A fabric that shrinks a half-inch on the pressing buck will shorten the jacket by 1 inch.  Interfacing and lining usually do not shrink, so a jacket would be very difficult to construct in this fabric.

Some designers wash or dry-clean a fabric once it has been made into a sample to see how it performs.  Trims should also be tested to make sure they can withstand the same care instructions as the base goods.  The designer may elect to send questionable fabrics to a professional testing laboratory that will run tests for colorfastness, washability, and abrasion.  These professional tests are especially important for garments that must stand up to the rigid quality control inspections of mass merchandisers like Sears, JC Penny, and Montgomery Ward.
